When we talk about interior design we always think about the outcome of it: how the space looks and feels.
Using our sense of sight and experiencing emotions are very important parts of what being human means. We experience and create realities thanks to the understanding, use and vision of these two wonderful tools.
However, there is a lot that needs to happen before reaching the point when we can clearly see and feel what the interior design proposal was.
From the first idea up to the execution of the development of it, there are a lot of steps that need to follow in the right order to get a beautiful ending, a well-crafted environment.
As it happens with a beautiful, subtle painting the frame will determine in a good way how the artist’s work will be perceived, understood. The frame has the capability of destroying the artwork or enhancing it.
In our case, the frame will be how the fixed elements of the interiors have been constructed and detailed: Flooring, walls, corners, joinery and lighting (distribution of them).
Flooring

The preparation of the floor (the substrate) will have an impact on the quality of the finish floor: its evenness, adherence (use of right adhesives) and performance.

Walls
Whatever the wall is: brick, stone, plasterboard, wood, etc it needs to be built correctly. If the walls are going to be decorated either with paint or wallpaper the preparation of them, their smoothness and application of the right base or primer will allow the final product to stick beautifully and look impeccable.
Corners
Corners are tricky to build not just because making them perfectly perpendicular to the floor is not that easy but because how you finish them (if plastered, with metal corners) will guaranty a sharp look for longer.
Corners are by themselves focal points so any effort implemented for making them better will help substantially to the final look.
Joinery

Joinery encompasses many elements within an interior but let’s focus today on the skirting and architraves as they will be important elements around which the walls are defined.
How they sit on the floor, how they connect with each other when they meet will provide that extra touch that will help to perceive the space as one of quality and care.
A well fitted, installed skirting beautifully painted will look as great as a solid wood one. It should be just a matter of style that that determines its appeal to some or others, not the craftsmanship in its installation.
Lighting

In this case, we are talking about the number of lights and the distribution of them in the space. Too many lights are as bad as too few of them.
If too many the room will look busy and noisy plus the amount of light can be excessive for the use it was designed for. Few of them and the room will look poor in feel and lighting.

Taking care of these different aspects in a room certainly will get the basics right for the next steps to come: decoration, furnishing, installation of lights, furnishing and accessorizing; all of them aiming to create a beautiful, good-quality interior.
